The Finger Lakes region is full of places to explore while you are visiting!

The Wineries
The Finger Lakes are also wine country, with over 58 wineries open for tasting! Finger Lakes Wine Country is the home of America’s very first bonded winery, established over 140 years ago. In fact, Finger Lakes wineries produce more wine than any other region east of the Rockies. You can taste world-class Rieslings, full-bodied Cabernets, crisp, elegant Chardonnays, scintillating Champagnes, and many varietals unique to our region.

There are wine trails for you to follow, along Cayuga, Keuka, and Seneca Lakes.

Ithaca is Gorges (famous saying, shirt & bumper sticker)
The most popular attractions in the area are the gorges and water falls located in Watkins Glen (Watkins Glen State Park), and Ithaca (Robert Treman Park, Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls). All of these parks are operated by new york state and require a one-time park fee. Each park has a leisurely hike through the gorge to the waterfall. You definitely do not want to miss these!

Activities for Kids!

In addition to the parks, I recommend to Ithaca Science Center located at:
601 First St
Ithaca, NY
607/272-0600
http://www.sciencenter.org

A hands-on science museum and outdoor science playground, the Sciencenter boasts over 150 exhibits including a walk-in camera, water raceway, and two-story kinetic ball sculpture, curiosity corner, animal room, and Discovery Space. Sponsor of the Carl Sagan Planet Walk. Also offering Galaxy Golf 18 hole mini-golf course.

Other great place to see (especially for a rainy day) is the Museum of the Earth located at:
1259 Trumansburg Rd (Rt. 96)
Ithaca, NY
Telephone: 607/273-6623
http://www.museumoftheearth.org

Experience what life was like beneath an ancient sea, track a herd of dinosaurs dashing across NYS, or touch relics of a world carved by ice. Concentrates on the geology & paleontology of the Northeastern US. The Museum exhibits over 650 specimens from one of nation's largest and finest fossil collections, including the skeletons of the Hyde Park Mastodon, Right Whale and the 500 foot mural, Rock of Ages Sands of Time.

Some other activies in the area:

- Shopping: The best places to visit are in Ithaca. The commons (located in downtown Ithaca) is a pedestrian area that includes many shops, restaurants, and boutiques. The other place to check out is the farmers market. This open air market offers fresh produce as well as locally made arts and crafts. It is open both saturday and sunday (9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.).

- Golf: There are several great courses in the ithaca area. The most famous is the Robert Trent Jones course located at Cornell Univeristy. You will need to call ahead to make a tee time to play here.

- Swimming: Several of the state parks including Robert Treman, Buttermilk, and Taughannock offer swimming in waterfalls and in Cayuga Lake. I can't vouch for the water temperature!

- Fishing: There are several places that rent boats for trips on Cayuga Lake. Make sure you inquire about obtaing a NYS license.
